Rocks are composed of many crystalline minerals, and these crystals form dramatic colors when viewed as a thin section - a very thin layer of rock - in polarized light. Rocks also contain abundant fractal forms that are visible at the microscopic scale. All of these images were photographed through polarizing microscopes. Each of the thumbnail images and links below will load galleries of 30-50 thumbnail images in the left frame. Clicking on each thumbnail in the left frame will then load a larger version of the microphoto in the central frame.
