This 2005 collage series was inspired by
the ancient concept of the elements - earth, air, fire, and
water - and continues the formal exploration of the Golden
Rectangle seen in my other recent collages.
I created four sets of collages within the Elements series,
each set based on four images representing the elements, and
five macro- or microphotos representing life or living things
(the combination and integration of all four elements). In
each set I created four coiled
Golden Rectangles (aspect ratio = 1: 1.618), four proportional
offset squares, five mandalas,
four square-root
of 5 collages (aspect ratio = 1: 2.236), and four 1
+ 3(Φ)collages (aspect ratio= 1: 2.854).
These collages were created entirely within Photoshop using photographic
images that were scanned at 3200 dpi for slides, or digital macro
images taken using a Nikon D-70 SLR. Film microphotos were taken using
a Zeiss M35 camera mounted on a Zeiss phase contrast microscope, and
a Nikon F2 body mounted on an Olympus dissection microscope. Macrophotos
were taken with Nikon F-100 and D-70 bodies using 55-mm and 60-mm
AF Micro Nikkor lenses and a 90-mm Tamron SP Macro lens.
